Ultrasound Guided Procedures During Pregnancy
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
1st Trimester Ultrasound Guided Procedure
- Placental tissue is sampled under ultrasound guidance to evaluate for aneuploidy
- Can be recommended to the patient after an abnormal Nuchal Translucency result
- A guidewire is placed through the cervical canal or transabdominally and entered into the placental mass
- Ultrasound guidance to prove guide wire located within the placenta, and to avoid fetal parts - A pre-procedure FHR and post-procedure FHR should be obtained
Amniocentesis
2nd & 3rd Trimester Ultrasound Guided Procedure
- An ultrasound guided procedure that draws amniotic fluid for lab testing to rule out chromosomal and/or genetic disorders, or fetal lung maturity. Can also be performed therapeutically if polyhramnios present.
- A guide-wire is placed transabdominally into the gestational sac under ultrasound guidance to insure fetal parts are not in contact with the guide-wire. A pre-procedure FHR and post-procedure FHR should be obtained.
